City bus
chugging along
destination nowhere
with nowhere passengers
going to nowhere jobs
with no eye contact.
reading the New York Times
as if they had a purpose
other than riding the bus.
the bus ride this morning
is going too fast
I will strike up a conversation with long legs
before the next stop.
But what do I say?
"What’s a nice girl like you
doing on a city bus with the likes of me?"

she gets off the bus
we could have had a wonderful life together
if you call this a life.
